Folding screen

Originally, it was a piece of furniture used to protect against the wind, but it also came to be used as a room divider and for interior decoration with paintings and various other decorations.

As the Han Dynasty dictionary Shakumyo states, "It can be used to block the wind," originally a folding screen was a piece of furniture placed behind a floor to block the wind. The house structures of the time did not have proper partitions made of walls like those of later times. The word "folding screen" only came into use during the Han Dynasty, and before that, "fui" and "fuyi" were the terms for folding screen. The folding screen was called fui because it was hung by embroidering axe patterns on its surface.

本来は風よけの家具で，室内の間仕切り，また絵画やさまざまな加飾によって室内装飾用などともなった。

　漢代の字書《釈名》が〈以て風を屛障す可し〉というように，そもそも屛風は床（しよう）の後ろに置く風よけの家具であった。当時の家屋構造は，後世のように壁による間仕切りがきちっとなされていなかった。〈屛風〉の語が熟するのは漢代からで，それ以前は〈斧扆（ふい）〉〈斧依〉が屛風にあたる。屛風の面に斧文が刺繡されていて，これによりかかるものであったので斧扆と呼ばれた。
