Sanboin Temple

Japanese: 三宝院 - さんぼういん
Sanboin Temple
This temple is a special head temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect in Koya-cho, Wakayama Prefecture. The principal image is a wooden statue of Kitamen Daishi. It is said that the temple was founded when Kukai's mother built it within Jison-in Temple (→ Onna-Koya). The "Tsumamuki no Amazake" offered at the Seimei-gu ceremony on March 21 of the lunar calendar is said to have come from a legend that Kukai's mother peeled chestnuts and rice with her own fingernails to make sake and sent it to Kukai, but another record states that it was built by Honen. The temple preserves important cultural properties such as the Nara period "Fukkōsaku Shinhen Shingonkyō" (18 volumes), which is designated as a national treasure, the late Heian period "Bunkyō Hifuron" (6 volumes), the Kamakura period "Gogyō Daigi-kan Daigo" (1 volume), and the "Hakushi Monjō-kan Sanzan-kan" (1 volume).

Sanboin Temple

It is a sub-temple of Daigoji Temple, the head temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, located in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City. It was founded in 1115 by the 14th head priest Shokaku, and became the temple of Emperor Toba. It has been burned down and moved many times, but Toyotomi Hideyoshi repaired and rebuilt the main hall. Both the architecture and gardens are representative of the Momoyama period, and the Karamon Gate and Omote Shoin are designated national treasures. It houses Tawaraya Sotatsu's Bugaku-zu and Gien's Gien Jungo Nikki.
