...A deciduous tall tree of the Hamamelidaceae family native to China with palmately 3-lobed leaves, planted in Japan as a roadside tree or park tree (illustration). Its Chinese name is Kaede-koju. The trunk is upright and can reach a height of 40m. The current-year branches are covered with soft hairs. The leaves grow alternately on 10cm stalks, 7-15cm in diameter, heart-shaped at the base, 3-lobed, and have long, pointed, egg-shaped triangular lobes. They turn crimson purple in autumn. In spring, male and female flowers bloom separately in spherical heads on the same plant. The male inflorescences are further divided into racemes, but the female inflorescences grow singly on long stalks. ...
