A religious city in the Cariri Valley at the foot of the Araripe Plateau in the southern part of the state of Ceara in northeastern Brazil. Population 163,527 (1991). Also known simply as Juazeiro. When Father Cicero Romão Batista began preaching in 1872, it was just a small village, but after poor farmers in Sertão (a semi-arid inland region) began to believe that he was the reincarnation of Christ who performed miracles, it became a major pilgrimage site, and by the time of his death in 1934, it had become the capital of Sertão with a population of about 40,000.
