Nishitosa [village] - Nishitosa

Japanese: 西土佐[村] - にしとさ
Nishitosa [village] - Nishitosa
A village in Hata County in the southwest of Kochi Prefecture. Population 4,061 (1995). Located in the middle reaches of the Shimanto River, the Shimanto River flows south through the center of the town, and is joined by the Yoshino River, Meguro River, and Kuroson River from the northwest. The northwestern part of the town borders Ehime Prefecture. Most of the area is covered by forests, and in the past it was called Shimoyamago. It produced high-quality timber, and the name "Shimoyama lumber" appears in medieval records (Daijoin Temple and Shrine Miscellaneous Records). In particular, in the beautiful forests of the Kuroson area at the upper reaches of the Kuroson River, there was an incident of illegal logging by the neighboring Iyo Uwajima Domain in the early Edo period.
