… The pioneers of the landscape garden style were the Earl of Shaftesbury, Addison, and Pope, whose writings attacked French formal gardens, but the Temple mansion at Stowe (Buckinghamshire) was one of the earliest gardens. It was originally designed by Charles Bridgeman (?-1738), who introduced a haha, a kind of moat, at the boundary between the garden and the outside world, so that the view would blend unobstructedly into the surrounding nature. Stowe became a monumental garden, with masters such as Bumbler, Kent, Gibbs, and Brown, who collaborated with Bridgeman, adding to it one after another. …
