A professional American football league in the United States. Its headquarters are in New York City. It was founded in 1920 in Canton, Ohio as the Association of American Professional Football (APFA). In 1922, it changed its name to the National Football League (NFL). Its first president was Jim Thorpe, a track and field and baseball player who also played in American football. Initially, it consisted of five teams from Ohio, four from Illinois, two from Indiana, two from New York, and one from Michigan (only two of these teams remain from the time of its founding). In the 1960s, it struggled with competition from the newly established American Football League (AFL) and unstable organizational management, but in 1970, it merged with the AFL. A league of 26 teams was formed under the name of the NFL. Since then, it has expanded four times, adding six teams, making it the strongest professional American football league. Starting in the 2002 season, both the National Conference (NFC) and the American Conference (AFC) adopted a four-division system, East, West, North and South, with the 32 teams divided into eight divisions of four teams each. Twelve teams advance to the playoffs each year, and the winner is decided in the Super Bowl. The Pro Football Hall of Fame has been operating in Canton since 1963.
