Itaya Pass

A pass on the Itaya Kaido (Yonezawa Kaido) between Fukushima City and Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture. It is 755 meters above sea level. Located on the south side of Mt. Hachimori, the pass was opened by the Yonezawa Domain in 1850 (Kaei 3). It was the shortest route to Edo via Fukushima Castle and was used as a route for the Yonezawa Domain's alternate attendance. A palace was built in Itaya (Yonezawa City) and was used as the lodgings for the lord of Yonezawa. In 1899 (Meiji 32), the Ou Line was opened passing directly below the pass.

福島市と山形県米沢市(よねざわし)との間にある板谷街道（米沢街道）の峠。標高755メートル。鉢森(はちもり)山の南側に位置し、1850年（嘉永3）に米沢藩が開いた峠で、福島城下を経て江戸へ行く最短コースであり、米沢藩の参勤交代路に利用された。板谷（米沢市）には御殿が置かれ、米沢藩主の宿所にあてられた。1899年（明治32）奥羽線がこの峠の直下を通って開通した。
