1836‐1904 King of Cambodia. Reigned 1860-1904. Fearing the threat of Thailand and Vietnam to the east and west of Cambodia, the King concluded a protectorate treaty with France in August 1863 while his Thai advisors were absent, but after struggling to find a solution between France and Thailand, he secretly concluded a similar protectorate treaty with Thailand in December of the same year. When France learned of this, it prevented the King from traveling to Thailand, and in 1867 concluded a treaty with Thailand that abolished the Thai protectorate treaty with Cambodia and recognized France's protectorate over Cambodia.
