As a generalization of the binomial distribution, if the probabilities of states 1 _, 2, ..., k are p1 _, p2 _, ..., _pk ( _pi ≥ ₀ , p1 + _p2 + ... + _pk = 1), then the probability of state i being taken r _i times out of n ( r1 ₊ r2 + ... + _rk = n ) is
This is called the multinomial distribution. It is exactly the form of ( p ₁ + p ₂ + ... + p _k ) ⁿ expanded by the multinomial theorem.
