...Body length 15-20cm, tail length 10-14cm. Widely distributed in the northern forests of Eurasia, but in Japan, the Siberian flying squirrel P. volans subspecies, the Siberian flying squirrel P. v . orii , lives in Hokkaido, and the slightly larger Honshu flying squirrel P. momonga (illustration), which is endemic to Honshu and Kyushu (also simply called flying squirrels). In Honshu and Kyushu, flying squirrels live on flat land, but flying squirrels are usually found in mountainous areas with an altitude of 1000m or more.
