It was originally given as a translation of the German word Stadtwald, but the original meaning was city-owned forest. Many of these forests were transferred to the city from the possession of royalty and nobility during the Middle Ages, and were essential to the lives of citizens and farmers. They were a source of fuel and materials for furniture, and the seeds and nuts of the Mizunara and beech trees were important as feed for pigs, so they were also used for grazing. Since the 19th century, recreational uses have been added to these forests. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
