This refers to the specifications set for a virtualized machine, regardless of the physical functions or peripherals of the computer running the virtual machine. For example, in the case of VMware Workstation 6.5, the virtual machine environment is provided with a motherboard equipped with an Intel 440BX chipset, Phoenix BIOS, VGA or SVGA, COM, LPT, 6 USB2.0, PS/2 mouse, Sound Blaster Audio PCI (excluding MIDI input and game port), 10 virtual network adapters, etc. It can also simply refer to the virtualized state itself.

仮想マシンを動かすコンピューターが物理的に備えている機能や周辺機器とは関係のない、仮想化したマシンに設定されている仕様のこと。たとえばVMware Workstation 6.5の場合、インテル440BXチップセット搭載のマザーボード、フェニックスBIOS、VGAまたはSVGA、COM、LPT、USB2.0×6、PS／2マウス、サウンドブラスターオーディオPCI（MIDI入力とゲームポートを除く）、仮想ネットワークアダプタ×10、などが仮想マシンの環境として提供される。また、単に仮想化した状態そのものをさすこともある。
