Passerine bird, Centipede family. Total length 18cm. Head to back and tail are gray-brown, chest to belly is grayish white. It mainly lives in grasslands with thick shrubs, and sings a distinctive song that sounds like "toppinkaketaka" not only during the day but also at night. It breeds in eastern Eurasia, Sakhalin Island, the southern Kuril Islands, and Japan, and migrates from the Philippines to Sulawesi, the Maluku Islands, and New Guinea to spend the winter. It migrates to Japan as a summer bird (→ migratory bird) and breeds in Hokkaido, but it is difficult to find because it always hides in the shade of vegetation.

スズメ目センニュウ科。全長 18cm。頭から背，尾は灰褐色，胸から腹は灰色みを帯びた白色。おもに低木の茂みのある草原に生息し，日中のみならず夜間も「とっぴんかけたか」と聞こえる特徴のあるさえずりをする。ユーラシア大陸東部，サハリン島，千島列島南部，日本で繁殖し，フィリピンからスラウェシ島，マルク諸島，ニューギニア島に渡って越冬する。日本には夏鳥（→渡り鳥）として渡来し，北海道で繁殖するが，常に草木の陰に隠れているため，姿が見つけにくい鳥である。
