Year of death: October 22, 1928 Year of birth: September 15, 1850 (October 20, 1850) A Meiji-era translator. Born in Awa (Tokushima). His pen name was Shunshun. His father was Inoue Fuyui, who had studied Western forensic medicine under Philipp Franz von Siebold. At the age of seven, he began studying English under Doncker-Curtius through his father's connections. From 1881 (Meiji 14), he worked as a translator for the Ministry of Finance, and later the Ministry of Education, while translating many Western novels. His works include Verne's A Trip to the Moon, EGE Lytton's A Strange Story (both in 1880), Thomas More's Utopia (1882), Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice (The Trial of the Pawnbroker), and Defoe's The Voyage of Lu Min Sun (both in 1883).
