Tsutomu Inoue

A Meiji-era translator. Born in Awa (Tokushima). His pen name was Shunshun. His father was Inoue Fuyui, who had studied Western forensic medicine under Philipp Franz von Siebold. At the age of seven, he began studying English under Doncker-Curtius through his father's connections. From 1881 (Meiji 14), he worked as a translator for the Ministry of Finance, and later the Ministry of Education, while translating many Western novels. His works include Verne's A Trip to the Moon, EGE Lytton's A Strange Story (both in 1880), Thomas More's Utopia (1882), Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice (The Trial of the Pawnbroker), and Defoe's The Voyage of Lu Min Sun (both in 1883). He died of old age in Kobe. His wife was Uchida Roan's aunt, Yoshizawa Koko. <References> Yanagida Izumi, Studies on Translated Literature in the Early Meiji Era.

明治時代の翻訳家。阿波(徳島)生まれ。号は春泉。父はシーボルトに洋法医学を学んだ井上不鳴。7歳のとき,父の縁故でドンケル=クルティウスに英語を学び始めたという。明治14(1881)年から大蔵省,のちに文部省で翻訳掛をしながら西洋小説を多数翻訳した。ヴェルヌ『月世界旅行』,E.G.E.リットンの《A Strange Story》の訳『竜動鬼談』(共に1880年),トマス・モアのユートピアの訳『良政府談』(1882),シェイクスピアのヴェニスの商人の訳『人肉質入裁判』,デフォーの『魯敏孫漂流記』(ともに1883年)など。神戸にて老衰のため死去。夫人は内田魯庵の叔母吉沢鉱子。<参考文献>柳田泉『明治初期翻訳文学の研究』
