A method of obtaining oxides by heating metal hydroxides and carbonates to expel bound water and carbon dioxide gas. An example is the burning of limestone (CaCO ₃₎ to produce quicklime (CaO), the reaction being CaCO ₃ + heating → CaO + CO _2. An important step in metal smelting is the calcination of high-purity aluminum hydroxide obtained by the Bayer process to obtain pure alumina, the reaction being 2Al(OH) ₃ + heating → Al ₂ O ₃ + 3H ₂ O.
