Year of death: 20th June 1910 (17th July 1813) Year of birth: December 4, 8th year of the Horeki era (January 2, 1759) A scholar of Japanese classics and woodblock printmaker in the late Edo period. The fifth son of Uematsu Nobutada, a samurai of the Nagoya (Owari) domain. Nicknamed Ichikuro and later Chubei, he went by the name Shoin. At the age of 17, his father became a ronin (masterless samurai). He became a woodblock printmaker in the area around Nagoya Castle. He was involved in the woodblock engraving of Motoori Norinaga's famous work Kojiki-den, and in 1789, he became Norinaga's apprentice during Norinaga's visit to Nagoya, where he eagerly mastered Suzuya's learning. He personally engraved many of his teacher's works, including Tamakatsuma and Suzuya-shu. His efforts as a liaison between Norinaga's Owari clan and Norinaga can be seen in Norinaga's letters. After his teacher's death, he re-entered the school under Motoori Shuntei. Among his writings, Yamamuro Nikki (1850), a memorial record of Norinaga, is well known. <Works> Uematsu Ariyoshi Ibunshu, edited by Uematsu Shigehiko and Uematsu Shigeru (Robert Campbell) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
