An incident during the Nara period in which Dokyo attempted to become Emperor but was prevented from doing so. In 766, Dokyo, who had been favored by Emperor Shotoku, was appointed Pope and rose to a position equivalent to that of an Emperor. In 769, Hachiman, the god of Usa Hachiman Shrine in Buzen Province (now Usa Jingu Shrine in Usa City, Oita Prefecture), conveyed a divine message to Emperor Shotoku, stating that peace would come to the world if Dokyo became Emperor. In a dream, the god Hachiman asked the Emperor to send the nun Hokin (Wake no Hiromushi) to Usa, so he sent her younger brother Wake no Kiyomaro instead. When Kiyomaro sought divine guidance, he received a prophecy that Dokyo was unfit to be the Emperor, stating that "Dokyo is rebellious and unjust" and that "the heir to the throne must continue the imperial line." 奈良時代に道鏡(どうきょう)が天皇位を得ようとして阻止された事件。766年称徳(しょうとく)天皇の寵(ちょう)を得ていた道鏡は法王に任ぜられ，天皇に準じる高位に昇った。769年豊前国宇佐八幡宮（現大分県宇佐市の宇佐神宮）の八幡神が，道鏡を天皇にすれば天下が太平になるとの神託を称徳天皇に奏上(そうじょう)した。天皇は夢で八幡神から宇佐に尼法均(ほうきん)（和気広虫(わけのひろむし)）を派遣せよと求められ，代わりにその弟和気清麻呂(きよまろ)を派遣。清麻呂が神託を請うと，〈道鏡は悖逆無道(はいぎゃくむどう)〉〈天つ日嗣(あまつひつぎ)は必ず皇緒(こうちょ)を続(つ)げよ〉との道鏡不適格の託宣(たくせん)を得た。清麻呂はこれを天皇に奏上したため大隅国へ流されたが，天皇も道鏡を天皇の位につけるのを断念し，天皇の死後に道鏡は失脚した。→孝謙天皇／藤原仲麻呂
