Mount Omuro

Japanese:
Mount Omuro

A cone-shaped volcano with scree cones in the southern part of Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It was designated a national natural monument in 2010. It is also known as Amagi Fuji. It is 580 meters above sea level. There is a crater at the top with a diameter of about 300 meters. It is estimated that the activity occurred about 5,000 years ago, during the final stage of the Amagi volcanic activity, when a large amount of basalt lava flowed out from the northeastern foot, forming the Sakibara Lava Plateau. The eastern end of the plateau forms the sea cliffs of Jogasaki Coast facing Sagami Bay, and lava tunnels can be seen extending from Futo to Yahatano. Mt. Iwamuroyama, at the northeastern foot of Mt. Omuroyama, which is now a cactus park, is a lava flow cone, and Lake Ippekiko to the north is a dammed lake. The areas of Totari and Ike were also blocked off but have since been turned into rice fields. The area used to be water-scarce, but after the Izu Kyuko Line opened in 1961, the area saw the development of Izu Kogen villas and tourist facilities. To the northeast is Mt. Komuroyama (321 meters), which is now Komuroyama Park. It takes 35 minutes by bus from Ito Station to the cactus park. There is a chairlift to the summit. In February, a mountain burning event is held.
