Brown Hakeling

A marine fish belonging to the family Gadidae of the class Osteichthyes. In some areas it is called Donko. It is found along the Pacific coast south of southern Hokkaido, along the coast of the Sea of ​​Japan, and along the coast of the Sea of ​​Okhotsk, as well as in southern Taiwan. Its body is slightly elongated and its tail is laterally compressed. The bases of the second dorsal fin and anal fin are long, reaching just before the tail fin. Its snout is blunt and it has one barbel on the lower jaw. There is a round black area (light-emitting organ) behind the pelvic fin. It is very similar to the Gadara and has been treated as the same species, but this species can be distinguished from the Gadara by its dark brown body color, small eyes that are about two-thirds the length of its snout, and the fact that it lives in waters shallower than 10 meters. It grows to a body length of over 35 centimeters. It is active at night, so it can sometimes be caught by night fishing. In the area north of Choshi in Chiba Prefecture, they are caught in large quantities using bottom trawls and are used as raw materials for fish paste products. In winter, they become delicious, so they are used for dried fish, soups, and hotpot dishes.

硬骨魚綱タラ目チゴダラ科に属する海水魚。ドンコとよぶ地方がある。北海道南部以南の太平洋沿岸と日本海沿岸、オホーツク海沿岸のほか、台湾南部にも分布する。体はやや延長し、尾部は側扁(そくへん)する。第2背びれと臀(しり)びれの基底は長く、尾びれの直前に達する。吻(ふん)は円鈍で、下あごに1本のひげがある。腹びれの後方に丸い黒色部（発光器）がある。チゴダラにきわめてよく似ており、同種として扱われたこともあるが、本種は体色が濃い褐色で、眼が小さくて吻長のおよそ3分の2であること、水深10メートルより浅いところにすむことなどでチゴダラと区別できる。体長35センチメートル余りになる。夜間に活発に活動するので、夜釣りなどで釣れることがある。千葉県の銚子(ちょうし)以北では機船底引網で大量に漁獲され、練り製品の原料にされる。冬期にはおいしくなるので干物、汁物、鍋物(なべもの)などにされる。
