Fontaine
American actress. Born in Japan to British parents. Her father was invited to teach English at Tokyo Imperial University. Her mother was a stage actress. She moved to the United States at a young age. Her parents later divorced, and she studied at the American School in Tokyo where her father lived, graduating in 1935. She began her career as a stage actress in the United States, but was discovered by Hollywood producer David O. Selznick, and in 1940 she played the lead role in Alfred Hitchcock's film Rebecca, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress and became an instant star. She went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress in Hitchcock's Sudden End in 1941, and was also nominated for an Academy Award for Edmund Goulding's The Virgin (1943), solidifying her stardom with her intelligent beauty and acting ability. Her other notable films include A Friend (Max Orfeus, 1948) and The Passionate Passion (William Dieterle, 1950). Since the mid-1950s, she has been active on the stage. Her sister, Olivia de Havilland, was also a great actress who won the Academy Award twice, making them the only siblings to have won an Academy Award.

Fontaine

British female dancer. Her real name was Peggy Hookham. She studied ballet with G. Goncharov (1904-1954) in Shanghai, where her father was posted, as a child, and then with SA Astafieva (1876-1934), a graduate of the Mariinsky Theatre, in London. In 1934, she made her debut in The Nutcracker with the Big Wells Ballet (later the Royal Ballet). She went on to dance leading roles in major works such as Giselle and Swan Lake, and gained widespread popularity. Her most famous role was Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty. She also gave an excellent interpretation of the new ballet choreographed by Ashton. In 1956, she married Roberto Arias, who was also the Panamanian ambassador to the UK. In 1959, she first visited Japan. In 1961, just as she was considering retirement, she met Nureyev, and they continued to dance together for more than ten years, showing a wonderful partnership. Her autobiography, Margot Fontaine (1975), is published by MacMillan.
