...This work, which combines Japanese instruments with an orchestra of both East and West, attracted much attention at its premiere and has since been frequently performed by orchestras around the world. The two instruments, the shakuhachi and biwa, which have each had their own separate histories, first met in this work and the 1966 work Eclipse. Furthermore, this duet of Japanese instruments creates a unique musical time and space as it blends and clashes with the orchestra, which was composed under the influence of Debussy and Messiaen. The composer originally gave the work the title Water Rings. ...
