Kanazawa Sadaaki

Japanese:
Kanazawa Sadaaki
Year of death: 2nd year of Shokei/3rd year of Genkō (1333.7.4)
Year of birth: Koan 1 (1278)
A military commander in the late Kamakura period. His father was Akitoki and his mother was the daughter of Endo Tametoshi. His residence was Akahashi. In 1294, he served at the Imperial Court as a treasurer of Higashi-Nijo-in. In 1302, he was appointed as the Rokuhara Tandai Nanga, and in 1309, he went down to the area and joined the Hyōjōshū and Yorigoshū, and after Nagai Munehide retired, he became the head of the Injutsu Bureau. From the following year until 1314, he was in the Rokuhara Tandai Kitagata. The following year, he became Renshō. He joined the Gonen Yorigoshū. In 1326, Hojo Takatoki resigned as regent, and amidst efforts to prevent Nagasaki Takasuke from assuming the position of regent for his younger brother Yasuie, Hojo Takatoki assumed the position, but he resigned after about ten days. His appointment as regent was the result of resolving internal disputes over the selection of the successor to Tokuso, including members of the Hojo clan and Tokuso's vassals. When Hojo Tokimura was assassinated in 1305 while he was still in office, rumors circulated that he would be transferred to the Chinzei Tandai, and he had an unusual career, having served as the Rokuhara Tandai twice. In terms of culture, he collected many Japanese and Chinese books, enriching the Kanazawa Library to the extent that it "contained all the books in Japan." He also completed the Seto Bridge in Mutsuura Manor, improving the transportation network with Kamakura, and dispatched Chinese ships to secure construction fees to repair the main hall of his family temple, Shomyoji. Sadaaki was the main sect of Jozaiko-in Temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto. In negotiations with court nobles, Sadaaki backed up the plan to build a platform for the precepts of Akiben (Sadaaki's younger brother) of Miidera, and the succession of the Muromachi-in territory, which infuriated Emperor Hanazono, was handled in favor of the Daikakuji line. Kanazawa Sadaaki's letters, of which there are about 500, are basic historical materials for the political history of the late Kamakura period. There is a picture and a Gorinto (a memorial tower) at Shomyoji Temple. <References> Motoshige Maeda, "The Culture of the Samurai" (Kanagawa Prefecture History/Special Topics 3/Culture), Kanazawa Bunko Materials Catalog/Letter Volume 1, Shinichi Sato, "Research on the Lawsuit System of the Kamakura Shogunate"
