A term used to indicate the number of disk drives built into a computer. Hard disks, floppy disks, CDs, DVDs, and other drives built into a computer all have disks that rotate around a "spindle," so the total number of drives built into a computer is called "two spindles" (when a hard disk and a DVD-ROM drive are built in, for example) or "three spindles" (when a floppy disk, hard disk, and DVD-ROM drive are built in, for example). Currently, the minimum configuration is a "one spindle" with one hard disk built in to run the OS (basic software) and application software and to store data, but if the hard disk is replaced with an SSD that uses large-capacity flash memory, there will be no "rotating disks," so it will become a "zero spindle." Some manufacturers have already released "zero spindle computers" as special models of mobile computers with excellent portability.
