A general term for paintings on the floor, walls, sliding doors, cedar doors, partitions, ceilings, etc., of Japanese architecture. Sometimes used simply as a synonym for sliding door paintings. The history of sliding door paintings dates back to the Heian period, but the style was established with the establishment of Shoin-zukuri architecture in the Muromachi period, and the style of magnificent gold and silver sliding door paintings made a great leap forward with the construction of large-scale palaces by military commanders from the Momoyama period to the early Edo period. Works from that time remain at Nanzen-ji Temple, Chishaku-in Temple, Daikaku-ji Temple, Nijo Castle, Nishi Hongan-ji Temple, and other places. The term "zashiki-e" created in the Muromachi period also applies to this term. Incidentally, sliding door paintings and folding screen paintings are also called shohei-ga (screen paintings). → Related items Azuchi-Momoyama period | Unkoku Togan | Kano Eitoku | Kano Takanobu | Kano Mitsunobu | Kano Motonobu | Koto, chess, calligraphy and painting | Seasonal paintings | Shikishi | Jukoin | Monthly paintings | Hasegawa Tohaku | Higashiyama Villa | Sliding doors | Murals | Maruyama Okyo | Paintings of famous places | Watanabe Ryokei Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
