Born: January 4, 1772 in Paris
[Died] April 10, 1825. Indre-et-Loire, Béres. French satirist and Greek scholar. He served as a soldier during the revolution and imperial era, but retired to his estate near Tours during the Restoration, where he published witty political pamphlets against the reactionary politics of the Bourbon dynasty, playing the role of Voltaire's successor. On the other hand, his devotion to Greek literature led him to follow in the footsteps of A. Chénier, and his style is pure, elegant, and refined, so he can be called the last French classicist writer. In addition to Pamphlet des Pamphlets (1824), he also produced excellent translations of Greek literature.

フランスの風刺作家，ギリシア学者。革命時代や帝政期には軍人生活をおくったが，王政復古時代にはツール近在の領地に隠退し，ブルボン王朝の反動政治に対する機知にあふれた政治的パンフレットを発表，ボルテールの後継者的役割を果した。他方，ギリシア文学への傾倒によって A.シェニエの衣鉢を継ぎ，また，その文体の純粋，優美，典雅によってフランス最後の古典主義作家とも呼びうる。『パンフレットのパンフレット』 Pamphlet des Pamphlets (1824) などのほかに，ギリシア文学のすぐれた翻訳がある。
