Pope of the Roman Empire (reigned 590-604), Doctor of the Church, and Saint. Commonly known as Gregory the Great. Born into a family of Roman senators, he served as a monk and bishop's nuncio before ascending to the throne. He worked tirelessly to evangelize England, relieve the poor, and build churches, laying the foundations for the country's subsequent development. In addition to writings such as Discourse on Morals, Pastoral Regulations, and Dialogues, he also left behind a vast collection of letters. He was also active in developing the liturgy, and a Gregorian chant is named after him. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
