Kaneko Kunen

Japanese: 金子薫園 - かねこくんえん
Kaneko Kunen

Poet. Born in Tokyo. Real name Yutaro. Dropped out of Tokyo Prefectural Normal Middle School (now Hibiya High School). In 1893 (Meiji 26), he joined Ochiai Naofumi's Asakasha, and in 1897 was put in charge of the poetry column in Shinsei. In 1901 (Meiji 34), he published a collection of poems called Kataretsuki (One-Sided Moon). He composed gentle and romantic poems, but the following year, together with Onoe Saishu, he started a "descriptive poetry movement" against Myojo, and in 1903, he formed the Shiragiku Society, aiming to write descriptive poems about nature in opposition to the supremacy of romantic love. In 1910, he published a collection of poems called Awakened Songs, which, influenced by the naturalistic ideas of the time, had a more realistic tendency. In 1913 (Taisho 7), he founded the poetry magazine "Hikari" and in 1930 (Showa 5), influenced by the emerging tanka movement, he experimented with free-style tanka, moving with the times. His poems were lukewarm, and he preferred to sing about modern cityscapes. He also wrote many enlightening tanka poems. In 1946 (Showa 21), he became a member of the Japan Art Academy.
