A village in Ono County, northwest of Gifu Prefecture. Population 1,390 (1995). Located upstream of the Shogawa River, the village is located in the Hida Highlands, at an altitude of over 700m. Together with the neighboring village of Shirakawa to the north, it is called Shirakawa-go, and many Gassho-style houses remain to this day. Most of the village area is covered by forests, and agriculture and forestry are the main industries, but with the construction of the Miboro Dam in 1961, 40% of the rice paddies and 20% of the fields in the four areas of Kaijo, Nakano, Akaya, and Iwase were submerged. It was once known as a hidden area of Oku-Hida, but now National Routes 156 and 158 have been developed, and the area is becoming a tourist destination, centered around the dam lake.
