If we can equate tonal moments with impressionistic moments, this style might be called impressionism. However, in his music, the collaboration between nature (sensation) and imagination often transforms and repeats musical ideas, melodies, and chords by analogy, spinning out a continuity of the whole as a chain and accumulation of sound images. It is closer to symbolism than impressionism in that it is an art that allows sound to take the initiative, yet evokes something imaginative beyond the present sound, and that "when the image soars, it becomes a song" (Mallarmé).
