...He experienced the illness and death of his lover, and was unable to break his drinking habit, leading a miserable and lonely life. Nevertheless, his strong atheist stance showed no signs of weakening, and in 1874 he published the long poem "The Night City of Terror," which mixed this with feelings of personal despair.
