This old town occupies the right bank of the upper and middle reaches of the Yasaka River at the base of the Kunisaki Peninsula in Hayami District, Oita Prefecture. The Nippō Main Line runs through it. The central settlement, Nakayamaka, developed as a market town on the Buzen Kaido road. It produces rice, and also engages in livestock farming and greenhouse and outdoor horticulture. In October 2005, it was incorporated into Ota Village, Nishikunisaki District, and Kitsuki City.
