This old town occupies the right bank of the upper and middle reaches of the Yasaka River at the base of the Kunisaki Peninsula in Hayami District, Oita Prefecture. The Nippō Main Line runs through it. The central settlement, Nakayamaka, developed as a market town on the Buzen Kaido road. It produces rice, and also engages in livestock farming and greenhouse and outdoor horticulture. In October 2005, it was incorporated into Ota Village, Nishikunisaki District, and Kitsuki City. 大分県速見郡，国東(くにさき)半島基部の八坂川上・中流右岸を占める旧町。日豊本線が通じる。中心集落中山香は豊前(ぶぜん)街道の市場町として発達。米を産し，畜産，施設・露地園芸も行う。2005年10月西国東郡大田村と杵築市へ編入。143.71km2。8935人（2003）。
