The School of Chartres (English: L'ecole de Chartres)
Many academies existed in Chartres, France, from the early Middle Ages, but the scholars of the academy founded by Bishop Fulbert in 990 were known as the School of Chartres, and reached their heyday in the first half of the 12th century, when Chartres became a center of learning. The characteristics of this school were Platonism in universal questions, and broad humanism centered on the seven liberal arts. Its strong interest in natural sciences was also known for its active efforts to incorporate Arabic science, which was just beginning to become known at the time. Representative scholars include Bernard of Chartres, Gilbert of Poitiers, and Theodoric of Chartres, three successive headmasters, and William of Conches, and a scholar with whom it had a close relationship was John of Salisbury.
