Born: December 22, 1823, Saint-Leon
[Died] October 11, 1915. Sérignan French biologist and poet. Born into a poor peasant family, he studied hard and became a teacher, teaching science at lycées (higher secondary schools) around the country. At the same time, he devoted himself to observing nature and studying insects, and after 1879, he stayed in his home in Sérignan, southern France, and turned the garden into a laboratory, where he wrote his magnum opus, Souvenirs entomologiques (Souvenirs entomologiques) (10 volumes, 1879-1907). This work, imbued with scholarship, sharp intellect, and poetic sensibility, has gained a worldwide following. He also wrote many other science introductory books for young people. He also wrote poetry in Occitan, and in 1919, a work of verse and prose entitled Petit œuvre provençal du Félibre des Tavan (Provencal Works of Félibre des Tavan). He served as a senior member of the Occitan language preservation movement and was also honorary rector of the École du Bantu.

Favre, (Gabriel-Claude-) Jules

Died January 19, 1880. Versailles. French politician and lawyer. In December 1851, together with V. Hugo and others, he attempted armed resistance against the coup d'état of Louis Napoleon (Napoleon III), and was one of the five republicans who were elected in the general election of 1857. He defended F. Orsini, who attempted to assassinate Napoleon III. He opposed the Mexican Expedition, but supported the colonization of Cochinchina (South Vietnam). In 1870, he opposed the declaration of war against Prussia, and in September of the same year, he became Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the National Defense Government. In January of the following year, he concluded the Armistice of Versailles between Germany and France, and on May 10, he signed the Peace Treaty with Germany in Frankfurt.

Died: February 11, 1898. French novelist, Paris. Known for his regionalist novels. His representative work is L'Abbé Tigrane (1873). Other works include two novels published under the title "Scenes from the Life of the Clergy", Les Courbezon (62) and Julien Savignac (63).

Died September 25, 1955. Paris. French playwright. Manager of the Comédie-Française (1913-36). Known for his realistic style of writing that deals with social issues. His most famous work is L'Argent (1895).

フランスの生物学者,詩人。貧農の出で,苦学の末教職につき,各地のリセ (高等中学校) で科学を教えた。かたわら,自然の観察,昆虫の研究に努め,1879年以後,南フランス,セリニャンの自宅にこもり,庭を研究所と化して,大著『昆虫記』 Souvenirs entomologiques (10巻,1879~1907) を著わした。学識と鋭い知性,詩的な感性に貫かれたこの作品は,世界中に愛読者を得ている。ほかにも青少年向けの科学入門書多数がある。またオック語で詩を書き,韻文,散文から成る作品が,『フェリーブル・デ・タバンのプロバンス作品』 Petit œuvre provençal du Félibre des Tavanと題して 1919年に発表された。オック語存続運動の幹部委員をつとめ,エコール・デュ・バントゥの名誉学長でもあった。

フランスの政治家,弁護士。 1851年 12月 V.ユゴーらとともにルイ・ナポレオン (ナポレオン3世) のクーデターに武装抵抗を試み,57年の総選挙で当選した共和派5人組の一人。ナポレオン3世の暗殺未遂者 F.オルシニの弁護にあたった。メキシコ遠征に反対したが,コーチシナ (南ベトナム) の植民地化には賛成。 70年プロシアへの宣戦に反対し,同年9月国防政府の副首相,外相を兼ね,翌年1月ドイツ,フランス間にベルサイユ休戦条約を締結,5月 10日フランクフルトで対ドイツ講和条約に署名した。
