Toshio Takagi

Japanese: 高木敏雄 - たかぎとしお

Born: May 1876 in Kumamoto
[Died] December 18, 1922. Osaka mythologist. Entered the University of Tokyo in 1896, majored in German literature, and devoted himself to the study of mythology. After graduating in 1900, he became a professor at Tokyo Higher Normal School in 1912 and Osaka University of Foreign Studies in 1922. At the same time, he attempted to systematize the study of myths and legends using Western (especially German) methods, and achieved pioneering results in this field. His works include Comparative Mythology (1904), Collection of Japanese Legends (13), and Research on Japanese Myths and Legends (25). In 1913, he collaborated with Kunio Yanagita to found Local Studies, a monthly folklore magazine.

神話学者。 1896年東京大学に入学し，ドイツ文学を専攻して神話学の研究に没頭。 1900年卒業後，12年東京高等師範学校，22年大阪外国語大学の教授をつとめるかたわら，欧米 (特にドイツ) の方法によった神話，伝説研究の体系化を試み，この分野での先駆的業績を残した。『比較神話学』 (1904) ，『日本伝説集』 (13) ，『日本神話伝説の研究』 (25) などの著作がある。 13年には柳田国男と協力して民俗学の専門月刊誌である『郷土研究』を創刊している。
