British-Indian Roundtable Conference

Three conferences were held in London between 1930 and 1932 to discuss the Indian Constitution. At the time, the popular struggle for complete Indian independence was in full swing, threatening British rule. The first conference was held from November 1930 to January 1931, and the general principle of an Indian federation was accepted. The Indian National Congress, which led the independence movement, initially boycotted the conference, believing that its purpose would divert the movement's direction, but in May 1931, under the Gandhi-Irwin Agreement, they agreed to attend the conference in exchange for the release of political prisoners. M. Gandhi attended the second conference, held from September to December 1931, but a clash of opinions over the electoral system led to the Congress representatives' withdrawal to India. The third conference was held from November to December 1932, and as a result of these conferences, the Government of India Act of 1935 was drawn up.

1930～32年インド憲政を議題としてロンドンで3回にわたって開かれた会議。当時インドの完全独立を目指す大衆闘争は非常な高揚を示し，イギリスの支配をゆるがしていた。第1回会議は 30年 11月～31年1月に開かれ，インド連邦という一般原則が認められた。独立運動を指導するインド国民会議派は，当初この会議の目的が運動の方向をそらすものとして，これをボイコットしていたが，31年5月のガンジー＝アーウィン協定により，政治犯の釈放を交換条件に会議への出席を承諾した。 M.ガンジーは 31年9～12月に開かれた第2回会議に出席したが，選挙制をめぐって意見が衝突し，会議派代表はインドに引揚げた。第3回は 32年 11～12月にもたれ，これら一連の会議の結果，35年インド統治法が作成された。
