〘Noun〙① A Buddhist term. One of the four forms of rebirth. To be born suddenly, without being bound by a mother's womb or an eggshell. Also, the thing itself. A type of living being in heaven or hell. ※Ryōiki (810-824), Vol. 2: "Suddenly, an image of Maitreya Bodhisattva was born on the bark of the brushwood branch." ※Jōruri: Shaka Nyorai Birth Ceremony (1714), Vol. 1: "Those who are born from damp soil (keshau) are unaware of the body, and whether they are human or animal, there is only one way to ascend to the next world." [Kusharon-VIII] ② A Buddhist term. To appear in a different form. An incarnation. ※Konjaku (around 1120) Vol. 11 : "There was a man named Gibuchi Sojo, whose common surname was Atō, and he was a person who was born from the Pure Land ." ③ One of the ways people are born to go to paradise. ※Ojoyoshu (984-985), Daibun 7: "Later on, he passed away. He was reborn in the East. In the land of the Supreme King of Treasure Virtue. In the midst of a great lotus flower. He sat in a cross-legged position. Suddenly he was reborn." [The Sutra of Immeasurable Life, Part 2] 4. To transform. Also, the very thing. That which is transformed. Henge. A monster. ※Kōjaku and Tsuruki Sandan (late Muromachi period - early modern period): "The sword that Mōfusa struck was also of a kesha's sword, and there was a strange smell in the air." ※Jōruri, Osanuba (c. 1712), Part 4: "There is nothing to be worried about. My mother is of course a kesha's body."
