Yashima [town] - Yashima
This old town in Yuri County occupies the middle reaches of the Koyoshi River in southwestern Akita Prefecture. Yajima, in the center, is the terminus of the Yuri Kogen Railway, and developed as a castle town for the Ikoma clan during the Edo period. Its main industries are agriculture and forestry, including rice paddy and livestock farming. It also operates lumber and sake brewing. In March 2005, it merged with Honjo City and the Yuri County towns of Iwaki, Yuri, Nishime, Chokai, Higashiyuri, and Ouchi to become a city, Yurihonjo. Area: 123.63 km2 . Population: 6,305 (2003).
