Japanese: 鹿屋[市] - かのや
Kanoya [city] - Kanoya
A city in the center of the Osumi Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1941. It spans the plateaus of Kasanohara and Kanoyahara, part of the Kimotsuki Plain, and the Takakuma Mountains. The city is the administrative and economic center of the peninsula, and developed as a military city after the establishment of the Naval Air Corps in 1936. During the war, it was a base for the Special Attack Forces. It is currently an air base for the Self-Defense Forces. The surrounding area is a major sweet potato producing area, and alcohol, starch, and shochu (distilled spirits) are produced there. Livestock farming is also thriving, with Osumi beef, black pigs, and broilers, and processing is also carried out. Kanoya Port on the western edge is a key port for transportation within Kagoshima Bay, and the Higashi Kyushu Expressway runs through the north. The National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Kanoya is located here. In January 2006, the towns of Kihoku in Soo District, Gohira in Kimotsuki District, and Kushira were incorporated. The area is 448.15 km2 . Population: 105,070 (2010).
