Picture Matching
[1] 〘Noun〙① A type of game from the Middle Ages. Two groups are divided, one on the left and one on the right, and a judge is appointed. Each group brings a picture and presents it to the other, and they compete to see who is the best. In many cases, the pictures are accompanied by a poem and presented in the form of a "poem match". ※Ise Daifushu (mid-11th century) "Reikyoden no Nyōgo no Himemiya no, Ohomue-awase ni, Tsuru" ② A game played among townspeople in the late Edo period. Each person is asked to draw an elaborate picture based on a theme, and the works are compiled into a volume, which is then scored by a reviewer. On a designated day, the participants gather to read the volume and evaluate it. ※Gakuya Zue Shuui (1802) Vol . 1 "The popular things in the dressing room at that time were hokku, kanmuritsuki, yanagitaru, and eawase" ③ A game of karuta gambling in which 48 Tensho karuta cards are used to compete. ※Ukiyo-zoshi Gozen-Gikeiki (1700), Vol. 8: “With one arm naked, he competed in a picture contest of forty-eight wishes, and later won three paintings of garuda .” [2] The title of the 17th chapter of the Tale of Genji. It is set in the spring when Hikaru Genji is 31 years old. It describes the entry of Genji’s adopted daughter, Saigū (later known as Akikonochūgu), into the court of Emperor Reizei and her victory in the picture contest.

[1] 〘名〙① 中古の物合わせの一種。左右の二組に分かれて判者を定め、互いに持ち寄った絵を出し合い、その優劣を競う遊戯。絵に和歌を添えて出し「歌絵合わせ」の形をとるものが多かった。※伊勢大輔集(11C中)「麗京殿女御のひめ宮の、おほむゑ合に、鶴」② 江戸末期、町人の間で行なわれた遊び。題によって各自趣向を凝らした絵を画工などに書かせ、それらの作品を一巻にまとめ、評者が点をつけ、定められた日に集まって開巻し評し合う。※楽屋図会拾遺(1802)上「当時楽屋で流行(はやる)ものは、発句、冠附、柳樽、絵合」③ 天正カルタ四八枚を用いて勝負するカルタばくち。※浮世草子・御前義経記(1700)八「片肌ぬいで四十八願の絵合(ヱアハセ)、後には三枚がるたのおせおせ」[2] 「源氏物語」第十七帖の名。光源氏三一歳の春。源氏の養女前斎宮(のちの秋好中宮)の冷泉帝への入内と、絵合における勝利を描く。
