Costeley, G.

...In 1570, the Academie de Poésie et de Musique, founded by J. A. de Baif with the royal charter of Charles IX and musician Joachim Thibault de Courville (?-1581), attempted to create metrical music, which attempted to transfer long and short syllables to long and short notes in the same way as classical poetry. Representative musicians of the second half of the 16th century include J. Arcadelt, Guilaume Costeley (1530-1606), O. de Lassus, Claude Le Jeune (c. 1528-1600), and A. Bertrand, and the style diversified with the revival of polyphony along with the homophonic writing style dominated by the highest voice, as well as the use of tone painting techniques and chromaticism derived from the Italian madrigal. At the same time as publishing collections of chansons, Parisian composers such as Athegnan published arrangements of popular songs for solo lute, keyboard, ensemble, dance, etc.
