Born March 22, 1785 in Dent, Yorkshire Died January 27, 1873. British geologist from Cambridge. He studied mathematics at Cambridge University (1808). He had a unique career history in that he began studying geology after being appointed professor of geology at Cambridge University in 1818. He was president of the Geological Society (29). While working to promote geological education at universities, he also engaged in extensive research throughout the UK, mainly in collaboration with R. Murchison. He is particularly famous for naming the Cambrian period in North Wales and the Devonian period in Devonshire. The Sedgwick Museum in Cambridge was built in his honor (1903). His main work was A Synopsis of the Classification of the British Paleozoic Rocks (1855).
