…Activated carbon is widely used as an adsorbent for purifying drinking water and for decolorizing in the food industry and elsewhere. It is made by heating various wood materials, coconut shells, coal, and other materials to 600-900°C in an air-free environment to carbonize them, and then activating them with metal chlorides such as zinc chloride. More recently, glassy carbon and carbon fiber have become more widely produced and used. The former is a hard carbon made by solid-phase pyrolysis of organic matter, and has a glassy appearance and fracture surface. …
