King of Denmark. Reigned 1340-75. Also known as Valdemar IV. Before ascending to the throne in 1340, he spent a considerable amount of time in Germany due to political turmoil in Denmark. After ascending to the throne, he aimed to restore the weakened Danish monarchy, and by 1360 he had brought all of Denmark under his control except for Schleswig, which he had nearly achieved. His expedition to Gotland in 1361 worsened relations with the Hanseatic League, and his aggressive policies caused conflict with the Danish nobles and the Duke of Mecklenburg, forcing him into exile.

デンマーク王。在位1340‐75年。バルデマール4世ともいう。1340年に即位するまで，デンマークの政治的混乱によりかなりの期間をドイツで過ごした。即位後弱体化したデンマーク王権の再興を目ざし，1360年までにスリースウィー(シュレスウィヒ)を除く全土を支配下に置き，その目的をほぼ達成した。61年のゴトランド島遠征はハンザ同盟との関係を悪化させ，さらに強引な政策はデンマーク貴族やメクレンブルク公との対立を引き起こし，亡命を余儀なくされた。
