Vakhtangov - Vakhtangov (English notation)

Vakhtangov - Vakhtangov (English notation)

Russian director. Born to the owner of a tobacco factory in Vladikavkaz. He joined amateur theater troupes as a teenager, dropped out of Moscow University, and attended the Adashev School of Dramatic Arts, where actors from the Moscow Art Theatre taught, before joining the Moscow Art Theatre in 1911. As a follower of Stanislavski, he worked as an actor and director at the Moscow Art Theatre's First Studio from 1912, and founded the Student Studio in 1913 (which was renamed the Moscow Art Theatre's Third Studio in 1921 and the Vakhtangov Theatre in 1926). Resonating with Romain Rolland's theory of popular theater, he sought theater suited to the new era, and boldly pursued new forms, placing emphasis on the creative individuality of actors and ensembles. His most famous production is Gozzi's Princess Turandot (1922).
