A type of aromatic hydrocarbon contained in coal tar. Its name comes from the Latin acetum (sour) and the Persian neft (resin). It forms colorless needle-like crystals with a melting point of 94°C and a boiling point of 277.9°C. It dissolves in chloroform and hot alcohol, but is insoluble in water. It is separated from coal tar and used as a raw material for dye synthesis, a raw material for synthetic resins, and as an insecticide and fungicide. 名はラテン語のacetum(すっぱい),ペルシア語のneft(樹脂)に由来する。
