(1) Private houses in the Nansei Islands Private houses in the Nansei Islands of Kagoshima Prefecture and Okinawa have separate ufuya (main building) and tongwa (cooking building), with a raised storehouse and livestock shed arranged on top to form a compound. In the case of thatched roofs, they are hipped roofs, with bamboo latticework tightly tied to the kogai.
