...Generally speaking, this refers to visits on various occasions, except for auspicious occasions, and gifts that one hesitates to call a celebration are called sympathy. Birth sympathy is also called birth house sympathy or hut sympathy, and is separate from the birth celebration on the seventh day (shichi-ya), in which close relatives bring rice cakes and other items before the birth, and in some regions, they make chikara mochi with this and feed it to the newborn. Food is often given as a sympathy gift when sick, and until recently, the sick person was expected to eat it together with the visitor, and even if the sick person was seriously ill and unable to eat, it was considered customary to offer a meal at the visitor's bedside.
