Joint - Joint

Japanese:
Joint - Joint

A general term for structures that join components of machines and buildings. Rivets, bolts and nuts, or welding are used to join steel frames and steel plates in bridges, steel towers, boilers, etc., and they are called riveted joints, screw joints, welded joints, etc. Rivet joints are classified into types such as lap joints and butt joints depending on the form of the joint between the plates, and single-row rivets and double-row rivets depending on the arrangement of the rivets. Welded joints are easier to work with than riveted joints, and the weight is reduced by the amount of rivets and reinforcing materials. In shipbuilding, riveted joints are no longer used due to advances in welding technology. Many joints are used to join machine parts, such as shaft joints that join shafts to shafts and pipe joints that join pipes to pipes.

In wooden architecture, the term "tsugite" is used when connecting pillars and pillars, beams and beams in the longitudinal direction of the components. Nails, bolts and nuts are often used to fasten the joints, but traditional joints that do not use metal components are still used today in places where little force is applied. There are many types of joints for wood, such as the saotsujigi joint, the koshikake dovetail joint and the ochikake joint. Note that connecting materials with different directions, such as pillars and beams or braces, at an angle is called a shiguchi, and not a tsugite.
