Jorge Basadre

Peruvian historian. Born in Tacna under Chilean occupation. Belongs to the "generation of university reform" intellectuals. Served as a professor at San Marcos University for many years, worked on the reconstruction of the National Library, and was also involved in academic policy as Minister of Education, exerting an absolute influence on the Peruvian historical academic world. His major works include "History of the Republic of Peru" (1968), "Peru - Issues and Prospects" (1931), "Masses, Cities, and Villages" (1947), and "Coincidences in History" (1973). [Shigeo Osonoi]

ペルーの歴史家。チリ占領下のタクナ生れ。〈大学改革の世代〉の知識人に属する。長らくサン･マルコス大学の教授を務め，国立図書館の再建を手がけたほか，文部大臣として学術政策にも関与し，ペルー歴史学界に絶対的な影響力をもっていた。主著に《ペルー共和国史》(1968)や，《ペルー――課題と展望》(1931)，《群衆，都市，農村》(1947)，《歴史における偶然》(1973)。【遅野井茂雄】
