1903‐80 Peruvian historian. Born in Tacna under Chilean occupation. Belongs to the "generation of university reform" intellectuals. Served as a professor at San Marcos University for many years, worked on the reconstruction of the National Library, and was also involved in academic policy as Minister of Education, exerting an absolute influence on the Peruvian historical academic world. His major works include "History of the Republic of Peru" (1968), "Peru - Issues and Prospects" (1931), "Masses, Cities, and Villages" (1947), and "Coincidences in History" (1973).
